CBD (Cannabidiol) is a hemp-derived non-psychoactive substance that is currently being studied for treating chronic pain, psychological disorders, anti-inflammatory properties. How does Cannabidiol work in our bodies?
The chemical CBD works within our bodies by reacting to cell receptors. Humans, among all mammals, have a system in our bodies that is called the Endocannabinoid System which is composed of receptors specific for receiving CBD. This system is responsible for maintaining many different bodily functions including immunity, appetite, nerve signaling, and more. Our bodies create our own cannabinoids known as endocannabinoids, like Anandamide and 2-AG. The compounds we ingest from plants such as CBD are called phytocannabinoids. The cannabinoid receptors are found on the top of cells for endo- or phytocannabinoids can activate. The two main cannabinoid receptors are called CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are more commonly found in the brain, and CB2 receptors are mostly found around the nervous system, but both receptors exist throughout the entire body.
How do Endo- and Phytocannabinoids react with the Endocannabinoid system?
The greater number of cannabinoids can bind to both receptors, but the interesting and unique part of CBD in specific is that it does not have a direct effect on either CB1 or CB2. CBD changes the way these two receptors can bind to cannabinoids, and also affect other receptors in the body. It also increases your natural production of endocannabinoids in the body.

Even with the aforementioned side effects, the medical academic community has ruled pure CBD as being safe even in high doses (up to 1,200) MG a day. It is recommended to start at a lower dose and increase the dosage as needed. Always ask your doctor about taking new supplements. The research on plants and other drug interactions is still very limited, so it is crucial to work with your body and providers in finding out what is helpful for you. Keeping a journal on how you are feeling day to day after taking new supplements for medical documentation is always good because of this.
